Kottayam turns 60!

Oh ennathada ee parayunnathu. Angane kottayam achayanmarkkittu udayipp irakkiyittu oruthanum ivide jeevikkathilla ketto
The land of Lakes, Latex and Letters is turning 60 this year. The land which has produced even a President for the country is becoming a senior citizen now. Paying tribute to the district of the all great 15+ great personalities of our batch.

The land bounded by Vembanad lake (the largest in Kerala) and the Western Ghats, lying between the Kochi state and the Travancore state (took a lot of struggle for Velu Thampi to catch a hold here).

The first town in the country to be certified cent per cent literate. The hometown of the first publishing press in the state, the largest regional daily in the country- Manorama and the first newspaper of the state- Deepika. The list is endless with the most read Childrens' and Women's magazine and well known DC Books. Kottayam has reached the negative growth rate of the West European countries. Here is the first college of Kerala (CMS College).

Moving on to the beauty of our land, the first eco-city in the country. The coconut lagoons, the unending rubber plantations, the misty mountains on the west, rivers intervening with the flow of the greens. And do you know, before Cochin port was made, we had two ports for the export of spices.

The district has made Kerala the largest rubber producing state. Spices are our brand marks.
And if ever you visit here dont forget to munch the tastiest Kappa, Karimeen pollichathu.... And no need to mention the Kappa biriyani...

And to the sons and daughter of this place: KR Narayanan, Akkamma Cherian (freedom fighter), ECG Sudarsan (nuclear scientist), KPS Menon (minister in Nehru ministry), Mammootty (a poorly known fact), St. Alphonsa (first saint from India), Muttathu Varkey, Pala Narayanan Nair, Beenamol, Anju Bobby, Jimmy George and the list is endless.

And you know we are what you call "Ahankarathinu kyyum kalum vachittu...." So dont expect anything more. We lead, others follow...
